The Atchaya Project by SMILE Welfare Foundation has successfully renovated WASH facilities in Mamandur and Vembakkam schools. This initiative underscores our commitment to providing safe and hygienic educational infrastructure in rural Tamil Nadu.

Atchaya Project: WASH Facility Renovations for a Healthier Learning Environment

In alignment with our mission to improve educational infrastructure, SMILE Welfare Foundation completed essential renovations to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in two rural schools in Tamil Nadu: Mamandur Government Higher Secondary School and Vembakkam Government Girls Higher Secondary School. This Atchaya Project initiative, approved by the Tamil Nadu government and Namma School Foundation, began on May 1 and was completed by July 5, 2024, with a formal handover to school authorities on July 9.

Project Highlights and Renovations

The project aimed to provide safe, accessible, and hygienic sanitation facilities, benefiting hundreds of students and encouraging regular attendance, especially among girl students. Totaling ₹11.5 lakhs, the renovations included:

  • Mamandur School: Refurbishment of both boys’ and girls’ toilet complexes, as well as installation of a new water tank to ensure a reliable water supply.
  • Vembakkam Girls’ School: Construction of a new septic tank for the existing toilet complex, along with a drinking water sump, an overhead tank, and a water dispenser to maintain hygiene standards.

These upgrades ensure students have access to clean, safe sanitation, promoting a more positive learning environment and supporting health and well-being at school. Through projects like Atchaya, SMILE strives to bridge educational gaps and support essential needs in rural communities.

Commitment to Ongoing Maintenance

We have urged school management, Parent-Teacher Associations, and local committees to actively protect and maintain these facilities, ensuring they remain beneficial for years to come. This commitment from the community is vital for sustaining the impact of these renovations.
